Oh, and just remembered the book “practical magic“, the movie was great so I tried reading the book, and the book was horrid and I was not able to finish it.

I heard the same thing from a coworker so I never tried the book. I also liked the movie and didn't want it tainted.

If you want books with the feel of the movie version, you may like Sarah Addison Allen. Garden Spells have very similar themes.

I don’t know whether I will get a lot of grief about this or not, but one of the books I had to put down was “Game of Thrones“. I put it down because I was about a third of the way through, and realize I was not interested in finding out the fate of ANY of the characters.  I was just bored with the book.

Now if I find if I am bored with a book, or dislike reading it further, I will go to the end of the book and read the last five pages or so, so that I have a conclusion for the book and don’t need to worry about it anymore.  What is sad is that sometimes I can’t even get through those last five pages.

No grief from me about Game of Thrones. I have the book on my e-reader, but I haven't started. I never started watching the show, and couldn't get into the hype.

I finished the first GoT book out of pure stubbornness, but found it so incredibly dull that I never cared to pick up the rest of the series nor watch the show. So absolutely no grief from me either.

The silliest reason I put down a book and never picked it back up again was that in the middle, I reached an ending that satisfied me.

I don't remember the title or author, unfortunately.

The book had an amazing premise. it was novella length and was about a time travel tourist agency. There are more books in the series and I grabbed the one about the US Civil War.

I hated the protag on page one. He was seventeen years old, his uncle was the big boss, and he worked for his uncle as a tour guide. He had two PhDs, neither one of them in history. Of course he's a genius. Question from reader: Why is this kid being given a potentially dangerous job that ought to require shadowing a more experienced guide for several missions? Answer: See character description. His uncle is the big boss and he has ancestors that came from the area they're touring.

He breaks a major rule of time travel in Chapter One, gets slapped on the wrist by his uncle the boss, then sent to guide another tour the Confederate States of America.

In Chapter Two, he meets the guide who's supposed to keep tabs on him, and he deliberately undermines the other guide's authority in front of the paying tourists. And he ogles the only female tourists, a teenage girl and her mother. The author probably didn't intend the narrative to ogle the mother, but it read that way and doesn't say anything good about the writing.

Kid time travels, messes up big in front of the locals, and then gets back to the story present, at which point his uncle reassigns him.

DONE. Good ending.

Of course there is half a novella to go, but that ending satisfied me and I don't want to keep going only to find out the kid's a hero.

Is it wrong of me to have hoped that the ending you liked was 'He took a cannon ball to the head.  The end.'?

Thanks for reminding me. There have been series that like that for me. Reader reviews warning to stay away from the last book. Readers have warned not to read the short story that ties into the main series. I heed those warnings.

Don't I wish! But the actual "ending" was the point where the kid got yanked from the mission and treated like any other bad employee who refused to follow procedure. Good enough for me.
