Cocktails!
« on: May 22, 2018, 03:01:34 pm »
So, since people have started talking about this over in one of the welcoming threads, I thought I'd just open a topic for it here. What are everybody's favorite cocktails? Share your tastiest, most creative recipes! Fun, non-alcoholic drink recipes are encouraged as well because I hate when I go out and for whatever reason I'm not drinking that night and my only beverage options are soda and water.  ::)

Bloody Mary (virgin; add vodka if desired). I plan to have this with Thanksgiving's and Christmas morning breakfasts:

3 cups vegetable juice
3 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice (about 4 limes)
1-1/2 ounces freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 1-2 lemons)
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon prepared horseradish
2 teaspoons Tabasco
1 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Garnish with a celery stalk, carrot stick, one shrimp and one slice of crisp bacon

Combine all ingredients in a large, non-reactive container and mix well. Cover and refrigerate and let the flavors meld, overnight is best but not more than 24 hours. Pour into large glass mugs with a celery stalk and bacon.

Birthday Cake Cocktail!

This is something I never would have thought I would like, as I usually don't like things that are sweet, but this is irresistable.  Some bartenders make variations with orange juice, etc., but I like this one best.

My friend liked this so much she had the bartenders make it as a signature cocktail at a big birthday party she gave.  She very nicely gave me credit, because she added some very clever touches of her own (see below).

Gellchom's Famous Birthday Cake Cocktail

Combine equal parts

Vanilla vodka
Amaretto
and
Pineapple juice

Shake with ice and/or serve over lots of ice.

My friend Julie's brilliant additions: serve in a martini glass with a bit of chocolate icing on the rim and a birthday candle garnish.

I LOVE Wallaby Darns from outback. I found this copycat
https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/88774/wallaby-darned/

But I change it a little.

Instead of champagne, use some sparkling (or not) Peach wine.
No fuzzy naval mix.
Make sure to mix the sugar with some warm water so it will dissolve.
I also add a good scoop of strawberry sherbert. It really helps keep it smooth, and as long as the peaches are frozen, and the sherbert is frozen, I can usually skip the ice completely.

I still say you can't go wrong with a good Long Island Ice Tea! However, last year I wasnintroduced to the Huana Party at a restaurant, and WOW! That is one dangerous drink!

I'm still working out the exact measurements, but here's the ingredients at least

Huana Party
Passionfruit juice
Elderberry flower cordial
Applejuice
Gin
Rum

Yum!

A couple of summers ago I went nuts for frozen watermelon margaritas. Can't remember the exact recipe now, but it involved cutting up watermelon into cubes and freezing it. Then you throw the frozen watermelon into a blender, add tequila, some lime juice and if you want, triple sec and sugar. I never bothered adding the sugar as I don't like drinks that are too sweet. Very refreshing and summery!

Have you ever tried adding dill pickle brine? I found a recipe recently (from NYT, I think) that suggested it and it's my husband's new favorite. I used half of what the recipe called for. (I don't drink bloody marys.)

If you want a simple cake-in-a-glass tipple:

Take one measure of vanilla vodka. Mix with as much ginger ale (or diet ginger ale!) as required.

Drink and enjoy.

It really, REALLY does taste like cake in a glass. I was dubious when I was introduced to it, but it really does. And because it's only one measure of alcohol it's practically a health food if you do it with the diet mixer. (Disclaimer: not actual health food.)

I've done something very similar to that, but with an herbal gin. I don't even like watermelon much, but it's great in a frozen cocktail! I've got some leftover frozen watermelon in the fridge... I'll have to try it out as a margarita!

Watermelon and GIN! Yes, that does sound quite lovely. I will definitely try that. I have half a watermelon in my fridge now that isn't very sweet at all and I'm thinking that freezing it and mixing it with some kind of booze (GIN!) might be the perfect idea.

Gin is definitely my favorite booze, lowspark!! My current favorite gin is Uncle Val's; it's cheaper than Hendricks but has a lot of the same herbal character! Plus it also has a neat bottle haha

For those who like white chocolate, here's my favorite white chocolate martini recipe:

2 ounces white chocolate liqueur (I use Godiva)
2 ounces irish cream
1 ounce creme de cacao
1 ounce vodka
2 ounces half-and-half
ice
1 pinch unsweetened cocoa powder

Shake vigorously with ice, pour into 2 chilled cocktail glasses, top with a pinch of cocoa powder, and serve.

I personally just like a champagne cocktail which is just a sugar cube soaked in bitters, with a capful of brandy and topped up with champagne. It makes me feel fancy.

My husband and I just started a weekly movie-and-cocktail date night now that I can drink again, so I will be watching this thread closely!

One of my favorites is one my in-laws picked up from a bar in Northern Wisconsin. I don't know the measurements because I make my BILs make them for me, but it's Amaretto, Gin, Coke, and Squirt over ice. So smooth and delicious...

Oh! Another I like is more like a spritzer.

I hate wine. I've tried all kinds, I just don't like it. I do like this though. Mix some strawberry wine with sprite. Somehow the sprite cuts the sweetness of the wine, and it makes a nice bubble effect. I don't have measurements, I just mix it to the strength I like.
