My husband and I just started a weekly movie-and-cocktail date night now that I can drink again, so I will be watching this thread closely!

One of my favorites is one my in-laws picked up from a bar in Northern Wisconsin. I don't know the measurements because I make my BILs make them for me, but it's Amaretto, Gin, Coke, and Squirt over ice. So smooth and delicious...

Oh, yah, that sounds like an Up Nort cocktail all right, dontcha know!

What an awesome idea! I'll have to convince my husband that we need to do this!  :D

It's a citrus soda- they might be using it in place of sour mix, I'm not sure.

Wisconsin: outdrinkin' your state since 1848... oh yeah!

(can you tell I'm from Wisconsin?)

My favorite drink is a brandy old-fashioned, sweet:

Ingredients
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 orange slice (plus extra for garnish)
  • 2 Maraschino cherries or brandied cherries (plus extra for garnish)
  • 2 oz brandy
  • 2-3 ice cubes
  • Sprite, 7-up, Squirt, sour mix, or seltzer (as desired to top off the drink)

Instructions Place the sugar, bitters, orange slice, and cherries in an Old Fashioned glass. Add a splash of water. Muddle, being careful to avoid the orange rind, until the sugar has dissolved. Add the brandy and a couple ice cubes. Stir. Top the drink off with your choice of soda, sour mix, or seltzer. Garnish with a skewered orange slice and cherry, if desired.

Bloody Mary (virgin; add vodka if desired). I plan to have this with Thanksgiving's and Christmas morning breakfasts:

3 cups vegetable juice
3 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice (about 4 limes)
1-1/2 ounces freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 1-2 lemons)
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon prepared horseradish
2 teaspoons Tabasco
1 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Garnish with a celery stalk, carrot stick, one shrimp and one slice of crisp bacon

Combine all ingredients in a large, non-reactive container and mix well. Cover and refrigerate and let the flavors meld, overnight is best but not more than 24 hours. Pour into large glass mugs with a celery stalk and bacon.

Have you ever tried adding dill pickle brine? I found a recipe recently (from NYT, I think) that suggested it and it's my husband's new favorite. I used half of what the recipe called for. (I don't drink bloody marys.)

I hadn't. But I will now. I have that brine and wow, it sounds like a fantastic addition. Thank you!

We tried these with our annual Christmas dinner this past year and they were a huge hit. My cousins and their husbands like them so much we ran out of the rhubarb syrup and the rum.

RHUBARB MOJITOS

Ingredients:

  • 10 mint leaves
1-1/2 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice
3 oz. chilled rhubarb syrup (see end for recipe for this)
    2 oz. chilled white rum
    1 oz. chilled Cointreau
    3 oz. chilled club soda
    crushed ice
    lime wedges

Directions per drink:

Place the mint leaves and lime juice in glass. Crush the mint and release its oils.  Add the rhubarb syrup, rum, Cointreau, and club soda.
Add  ice to nearly fill the glass, and then stir just a bit to combine and make the glass all frosty. Squeeze a fresh lime wedge over the top and add another wedge to the side of the glass for garnish.

Rhubarb Syrup:

I used this http://foodinjars.com/2009/05/rhubarb-syrup-recipe/ recipe so I can can the syrup to have in winter.

I'm such a terrible Wisconsin girl- I don't like beer or bloodys, and I haven't had a Brandy Old Fashioned yet. I chalk it up to not living in the state until I was almost 5.

I've never realized that an Old Fashioned could be made with brandy. I can't have whiskey, but I love brandy! Thanks for sharing this!

I just had a Dark and Stormy at a friend's birthday party, and it is a wonderful summer drink. Ginger beer, Goslings rum, and a lime wedge. Yummy!

I saw one on a bar menu the other day that was made with spiced rum - i wouldn't think you would call it an old fashioned but it seemed like a good idea. I didn't think there was mixer in an old fashioned?

We went to a bbq yesterday, and my friend's sister made a Sangria recipe.

Rose' Wine
Diet Squirt
Raspberry juice--- found in the juice aisle, it says 100% juice on the bottle, raspberry flavor.
Fresh raspberries, lime slices, fresh mint.

She just made it up in her head. I don't know the exact ratio of each one. She just winged it.
It was DIVINE.

Oooh, that sounds tasty, too! I don't think the classic version has any mixers, though I've seen them made with a splash of seltzer many times.

On the subject of brandy, here's my favorite brandy cocktail, the Sidecar!

2 oz cognac
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
3/4 oz Cointreau (or triple sec)

Pour all ingredients into an ice-filled shaker. Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a slice of orange or orange/lemon peel, and sugar the rim of the glass to feel extra fancy. I like to serve it with one of those giant square ice cubes even though you're not supposed to.

I once had it with an especially fancy brandy and the bartender toasted the orange peel with a chef's torch!

I’m kind of fussy about my drinks, nothing sweet and there are several kinds of alcohol I can’t drink due to what I like to refer to as “unfortunate incidents” in my younger days, aka I drank too much and got sick. that would include Rum and whiskey.

But my faves include plain old gin and tonic, although I have not had one since last summer when I over indulged a bit. I don’t THINK that’s made the list of UI, but we’ll see

Nothing beats a nice tart cosmo, lemon drop, or any other kind of martini that’s got either grapefruit, cranberry juice or some other kind of tart in it.

I had one about 10 years ago on a cruise, a ruby red martini, made with grapefruit vodka, juice and I think a small amount of peach schnapps. oh soooo yummy!
