Beans. If they're pulped to a paste, they're fine. Whole beans? No. No no no. To me, they have a gritty texture that makes me feel like I've taken a big ol' bite of potting soil. UGH.

The obvious part that everyone knows:

I am a vegetarian. I despise all kinds of meat. I will not even eat products that contain lard or gelatin.

The not-so well known part:


I dislike foods with a certain texture. Things like cream of wheat, cream of corn, cream of oatmeal, cottage cheese, and grits. Just thinking about them makes me gag. Mother had to stop making the cream of cereals because I would get so nauseated that it would return the way it entered.

I also dislike non-homogenized milk that shows the cream floating on the liquid. Makes me gag so much as well. Skim milk solved the problem for our family. Nowadays I only drink and cook with non-dairy milk (usually almond milk)- less issues as well.

I hate mushrooms.  Once in a great great while I've eaten a stuffed mushroom to try and give them another chance. Nope.
I also am very  picky about onions. I don't like big pieces or slices of raw onions in a salad or on a burger. I also will not touch big pieces of cooked onion. That is a texture thing for me.
I will eat raw onions diced very small in guacamole, salsa, and I'll eat a few on a hot dog.  I also have no issue with diced cooked onions in soup or chili, things like that.
I love onion flavoring though. Onion salt, sour cream and onion potato chips. Love those.

Sour cream and cream cheese. Blech.

I also don't eat shrimp, sauerkraut, raw tomato, or cold cheese. Melted cheese and tomato sauce is OK.

To be fair: While I do like sauerkraut, the concept (basically, old cabbage with enough salt to prevent it from spoiling altogether) is not very appetizing.  ;D

I mean, if you think about what a lot of foods really are, it might be off-putting. I mean, cheese--one of the best foods on the planet--is basically curdled, fermented milk, often with some tasty bonus mold thrown in. But let's not think about it.

My favourite cheese fact is that it was discovered when Mongol horsemen used sheep’s stomachs as bags to carry milk, and the rennet in the stomach lining and the heat caused the milk to solidify. Who was the first person that went yeah, give that here I’ll have a crack?

Disclaimer: this could be entirely apocryphal as I have never looked it up to confirm.

I like smoked salmon. I also like scrambled egg.

But for some reason, as soon as you put the smoked salmon in the scrambled egg, I heave.

Recently I was retrying some of my favorite foods from years ago to see if I still liked them. I discovered that I dislike Spam and Velveeta now, while when I was young I loved both of those things. It was disappointing and weird because my memory still registers them as yummy but my taste buds have done a 180 degree turn.

It's not always a change in taste buds. Many products have had their recipe changed over the years (usually for the worse, in my opinion).

I used to hate cherries. Pie filling and maraschinos are to blame for that, I think! While I like the syrupy stuff that is with the pie filling, the squooshy cherries are disgusting, as are maraschinos. So I think for years, from the time I was a child until about 12 years ago, I would not eat any cherries. Then a friend brought some thinking they would be a great treat. Ugh... so I said I would try them because it had been years since I had tried them. Well. It's a good thing I had heard tales of what eating a bag of cherries could do to you - they were so good that it was really hard to not eat them all! (And cherry pie and maraschinos are still awful, oh, along with black forest cake - the cake part is okay.)

I love differences like this... my current favorite cheese is a Cracker Barrel cheddar with garlic and herbs.

ANY kind of cream or sauce like cheese, that has warm cream, butter etc. IN it. they make me gag
And I’m fussy about my dairy spreads. If I have a bagel, and toast it, I MUST let it cool down before I put the cream cheese on, as if it goes on hot, and melts, all bets are off. and butter is the opposite, it MUST melt or I can’t eat whatever its on.
Any kind of “fake” butter and margarine literally makes me gag just thinking about it, let alone looking at it. ewww
Processed cheese. Real cheese, absolutely, I consider it to be its on food group. But the yellow slices that come individually wrapped in plastic? Nope.
