Favorite TV shows?
« on: May 22, 2018, 04:19:07 pm »
So what's everyone binge watching these days?

I'm planning on starting "The Rain" on Netflix tonight. I've heard good things about it, and I love a creepy mystery type show so I'm hoping it's as good as people have been saying.

Stranger Things is a favorite.

Altered Carbon started off great and kind of slowly died.

I have to start WestWorld.

I loved House of Cards until this current political climate made the show seem...tame...and the whole K. Spacey stuff soured it.

Westworld has been really great this season, so you need to watch it for sure!

I agree with you about Altered Carbon. I lost interest the more the show went on. It's disappointing because the premise is interesting and the first few episodes were really promising, but it's like they just didn't know how to keep up the momentum.

Full disclosure, I wait years before watching shows frequently. So right now I'm finally finishing Weeds.

I'm lucky that spoilers don't harm me. I frequently just read the Wikipedia after awhile to put my mind at ease and then go back to watch later and fill in gaps.

Current stories include all Real Housewives, Superstore and Brooklyn Nine Nine. Otherwise you'll find me watching Nightmare Next door, Homicide Hunter or other assorted Investigate Discovery crime shows. I'm diverse and kind of lowbrow, my cross to carry, I know.

Did you watch the original British version of House of Cards? It is available on Netflix. It beats the American version hands down in my opinion. It's only 12 episodes total so a relatively quick series.

Oh, let me know what you think? Living in Copenhagen, I'm very intrigued by a dystopian story set here, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

I'm currently binging "Criminal Minds". LOVE that show  :D

For anybody who has Amazon Prime, I highly recommend the miniseries adaptations of Emma (with Romola Garai and Johnny Lee Miller) and Sense and Sensibility (from 2008) that are on there. They are both excellently done and just delightful to watch (in fact, it really pains me to say this because I love Emma Thompson, but this S&S adaptation is honestly so much better than hers ).The casting is perfect in both of them, they stay wonderfully true to the novels, and they have oodles of pretty dresses to drool over. Emma has 5 or 6 episodes and S&S has 2 or 3, so they're nice when you want something a little less time-consuming than working your way through eight seasons of something.

There’s a British version? Same name?

There is but it's showing its age.

Yes. It's actually the original, based on the books. The American version is a take on it with some similarities but obviously a lot had to be changed since we have different systems of government.

I thought it was very well done. After having watched that, I didn't like the American version much. Too much filler to create a 13 episode season rather than just telling the story as the British version did.

I highly recommend it.

Ha. I guess it is outdated in that no one has a cell phone! :) But if you can set aside the lack of modern day conveniences, it's a very compelling story. Ian Richardson is excellent as Prime Minister.

Oh and I forgot to say, I *LOVED* how the series concluded. I won't give anything away except to say that actually *ending* the series makes for a much better story. They (apparently) followed the trilogy of books, making a 4-episode series per book.

Like I said, the American series has a lot of padding, scenes and even whole episodes in my opinion, which do nothing to further the story. But if you're trying to stretch it out to extra episodes and seasons, you have to come up with something to justify that.

I'm currently re-binging The West Wing.  ;D Someone explain to me why we can't get a revival here? Sam Seaborn for President!

...Oh wait, that actor is current on Code Black. Um... CJ for President? ;D

Fun Fact: They actually based an episode of The West Wing on my dad. Way back around 1998-1999, my dad (who is a lawyer/law professor whose area of expertise is election law and campaign finance) was nominated to a spot on the Federal Election Commission, which oversees campaign finance laws and regulations. His particular views on this subject meant that his nomination ended up being really controversial and got a lot more press than FEC nominations usually get. It became such a kerfuffle that they actually did a West Wing episode about how this guy had been nominated to the FEC and that just couldn't happen because he had such crazy views on money and politics and AAAAAHHHHHH CRAZINESS!!!eleventy!! I don't know how the episode ended (I was 12, if they weren't actually showing my dad, I wasn't interested), but in real life my dad's nomination did go through and he served a five-year term.

So yeah...I've still never actually watched the show, though.
