Snapdragon help, please?
« on: June 06, 2018, 04:39:48 pm »
Hoping some of you polite people have a greener thumb than I do when it comes to snapdragons.

I container garden on my balcony and my flowers usually do really well. Its morning and early afternoon sun, and historically both full sun and partial shade plants thrive out here. My pansies and petunias look amazing, if I do say so myself. My snapdragons are not so amazing. They are growing new blooms and filling out nicely, but theres something that looks like tiny sesame seeds on some of the stems that havent bloomed yet.

I cant find any pics on Google that match this and I'm hoping it's just plant seeds vs. some kind of rot or fungus...

Tried to post a pic but it's too large so best guesses would be appreciated

Turns out they are aphid eggs. Damnit. Considering turning that plantar into flowering succulents since apparently snapdragons aren't my friends.

Aphids aren't a death sentence if you get at them before they get established.

If you start treating with Neem oil now, it will kill them quickly when they emerge. Its organic and doesn't harm pollinators - only bugs that eat/suck on the stems & leaves.

I appreciate the tip, unfortunately Neem oil isnt an approved pesticide here so I am trying something else on the recommendation of the garden center.

I'm amazed! Why not? I thought it was one of the most innocuous things out there.

You can also make a spray of dish soap. It's slightly less effective, but will work.

Out of curiosity, where are you?

The dish soap/water combo in a spray bottle should help.  But don't use Dawn.  The extra grease cutters in Dawn aren't good for the plants - it tends to kill off some of the foliage.  Just buy the cheapest crap you can find and use that.

You can get this at Canadian Tire and Home Depot has one, too, at least in Ontario...

Angry Canada Goose-   We stress the use  of tobacco tea as a deterrent. untill the next rain then apply again.  boiling water, tobacco  leaves (or a bunch of ciggy or cigar  butts ), garlic. steep  for a few days  ( it is stinky nasty smelling  RANK!) . strain and add more  water and some drops dish soap. spray liberally , it won't kill but will send them running. ((and deer run away too).   We spray  6-7 gallons at a pop and honeybees are also  deterred but unharmed.

and put coffee groundss around your house and garden too -for little ants.

just trying  to be helpful hints.

Broken up egg shells are good for deterring slugs, especially around hostas.  Also good to put down the hole when you're planting tomatoes.

Thanks for the tips, guys!

I've been traveling for work this week and just got home to find that all seems to be well. My dad was tasked with childcare and flower maintenance while I was gone and did an amazing job.
