My smile for the day:  I was taking a walk at lunch and came across a woman, standing in the shade, on her phone.  I can hear, 'Hello? Hello?' and then she looks at the phone and says to me, in a beautiful Jamaican accent, 'I'm talkin' to nobody!'  And I replied, with a bit of a laugh, 'Don't you hate when that happens?'

Made me smile.

And the biggest feel good story for today is that they have managed to rescue all those boys and their coach from the cave in Thailand.  It's a miracle they all survived long enough to be found, let alone rescued.

A lady posted on Facebook that she sent her wedding gown off to someone to have it made into 'Angel Gowns' - small little dresses that she was going to donate to the local hospital, to be given to babies who didn't make it out of the hospital, to be buried in.

Very sad to think about but a beautiful thing to do with her dress.  I may do the same with a vintage dress that was my Aunt's.  I was planning on dyeing my dress, as it doesn't have a train so could be a formal dress, but I may do the same thing with it, if I can find the post again.

I saw that! But it didn't say what organization it was. So I googled "Angel Gowns" and found several. At least one has a geographic locator so you can see if they work with a hospital near you. I mean, you can send them anywhere, but it's nice to know you're supporting families in your area.

I was hanging out wet camping gear on the deck railing and happened to look down.  There was a hummingbird, not more than two feet away, dipping into the flowers on the canna lilies.  I was almost late for work because I was watching him/her for so long.

What a wonderful story!

Nowhere near as dramatic is something I think I'm doing. In November 2017 and due to a re-org at work I was transferred to a new supervisor at a different satellite campus. What I dreaded has turned out to be the MOST WONDERFUL and INCREDIBLE professional situation I have ever been in. Here's the thing; I know from him that it has been the same surprisingly wonderful thing for my co-workers over here as well. I guess a reputation of "being difficult" preceded me, thanks in no small part to a very difficult and nasty supervisor and dean at the old place. But in the year + that I have been here I have developed a reputation of incredible kindness and helpfulness and amazing smarts at so much that I have become the most popular person here. I don't much care about the popularity but it is a truly warm feeling to know that just being able to be "me" with the best boss in the world has made such a difference to so many, those here but also those with whom I interact on the main campus. I really like being able to make such a positive difference.

I had to run around town today, doing Christmas shopping and refilling supplies for cookie baking.

It was kind of frustrating because of all the extra traffic, overflowing parking,  and long checkout lines, and because nobody seems to carry things I thought would be easy to find.

But through it all, not one single person was rude, angry or obnoxious. Not even compared to an ordinary day out. Okay, one young lady pushing her grandfather in a wheelchair asked me where something was, and sounded slightly miffed that I didn't know. But she was obviously very tired and it was so slight I don't even count it.

The other shoppers joked around. The cashiers smiled. The other drivers followed traffic rules, waited their turns, and gave each other space.

Everyone must be on their best behavior for Santa! It was a lovely surprise.

My DH is a big fan of the Native American rapper Supaman. He shared this video profile/biography with me today, where Supaman talks about how he developed from just performing, to seeing his art as a platform to make a positive impact in people's lives.

He is also an experienced traditional dancer, and often performs in ceremonial garb. I just loved this quote:
"When I wear my regalia, it's not just fashion. It has a deep meaning. The beadwork that my wife and my daughter did for me, they put their heart and their soul into every stitch, and they're sitting there, they're praying for me. You know, 'Creator, watch over him and let him say good words.' Wherever I go and I wear my outfit, I take my family with me. You know, my wife is with me. My kids are with me. My ancestors, they're with me. I can't be drinking alcohol, you know, doing drugs, and wearing this thing, talking about crazy stuff. Because it's sacred. you know. It's sacred to me."

The full video is here:
