I was very snoopy as a kid, but I quickly realized that if I snooped and spoiled the surprise, I had no one to blame but myself if it wasn't as much fun on Christmas morning. I think that would be a good lesson for kids--maybe don't even wrap their gifts, if they've snooped and found them (but definitely make them wait until Christmas morning, or whenever you usually have presents). The only problem would be if some kids snoop and then spoil the surprise for the ones who refrained, because that isn't fair.

When I was little, I snooped in my mom's closet and found a giant stuffed lion.  I asked her about it and was told it was a gift for the little girl across the street!  I was so disappointed, because Giant Lion!!  When Christmas morning came and that lion was under the tree for me it was the best gift in the world.

Forgot to say that I shop all year, but not actively.  If I see a great thing at a great price I get it.  I already have a bunch of little things to go along with my sewing projects (tote bags) for about 10 of my female giftees.  Since most of the younger folk I give to "just" get cash, I also have to save up.

Just today, a fidget spinner drone popped up on facebook. I just bought them for stocking stuffers.

A fidget spinner is a stim toy. You can play with it to keep your fingers busy while focussing your mind on a task.

A drone is a flying, remote-controlled object that can film or take pictures.

So a fidget spinner drone would be a drone built either partially or completely out of fidget spinners.
The spinners didn't sell as well as desired towards the end, because the companies producing them forgot that whirling something with your fingers is, like I said, a form of distraction rather than an exciting toy for all ages.

I have a fidget spinner on my desk at work right now! Yep, you just twirl it with the fingers of one hand, and it spins. I use it to keep my left hand occupied while my right hand is working the mouse on my laptop. Otherwise my left hand would be twirling my hair, which is not great for my hair, or for my shirts because apparently I have pointy elbows and I was getting a hole over left elbow in every long-sleeved shirt.

I'm expecting a friend of ours to ask what I want for Christmas any day now, because it's July.

The earliest I've started shopping for Christmas gifts is before Christmas for the current year when I was already done shopping for that year.  There's never an official time to start shopping as far as I'm concerned.  I shop all the time (but I love to shop so this gives me the perfect excuse to shop).

I also keep Shutterfly on my facebook feed. I've already gotten 1 free bottle opener personalized. It's going to be perfect for a stocking stuffer for my husband, he started brewing his own beer.

They do a LOT of "free item" things, sometimes you only can have a choice of 3, sometimes you can have all 3, depends on what mood they're in I suppose. I watch them year round, and when I find something I know someone will like I pick it up. Last year, I had free playing cards with pics of my family on them in both boys' stockings. I also picked up personalized shopping bags for the grandmas that had pics of the kids.
