Family / Re: Dear Prudie: How long to wait for kids, etc.
« on: June 19, 2019, 08:36:56 pm »
I know a couple who got married (her second time & his first time) and she asked if he wanted kids.  He said that he'd think about it a while.  She reminded him that she is ten or twelve years older than he is and he didn't have an indefinite period of time before it would be too late.  Her first dH (divorced husband) was anti-children - he & his second wife have never had any kids.

Well, a few years later her second husband thought that he might be ready to try for a kid in a year or two.  She told him that some medical issues that she'd developed in the meantime had sent her into and back out of early menopause and that she was probably going to be infertile.  Pregnancy might make some of her medical issues worse.  Did he want to adopt or ???  They don't have kids and he seems to have adjusted.

When there is a big age gap or your wife's family enters menopause relatively early, maybe putting off a decision until she's almost forty isn't the best idea..

I arrived at the restaurant where I worked "on time" - nobody else was there and the back door was **** open, so I assumed that someone had gotten a ride to work, unlocked the door, and was in the bathroom...

Then I walked by the office and saw that that door had been broken into and the office was a wreck.

It had been robbed and I was walking all over the crime scene, setting tables (at least they weren't in the bar, where the office was, but in the dining room on the other side of the restaurant)), and setting up the coffee machine.  Ooops...oblivious?  Or just not used to being around "that sort of event"?  I walked into my own house some four years later to find that it had been burgled - I did react a bit more quickly.  To be fair, the front door had a tendency to "bounce" back if you tried slamming it behind you, so it would look closed but the  latch/lock wouldn't have caught.  That time, someone came in the kitchen window and left through the door - instead of a family member exiting in a hurry & slamming the door behind them (without looking to see if it caught).

So - similar thing happened at work and at home.

Books / Re: What are you reading?
« on: February 13, 2019, 10:19:51 pm »
Beta reading a book for a friend of my sister's, also the instruction manual for my new-to-me sewing machine, a fantasy novel, and some online science fiction that my son wanted to share with me.  I need to get back to the beta reading...I had planned to finish in while on vacation but that plan didn't work out.

Updates and Announcements / Re: Are We Circling the Drain?
« on: November 19, 2018, 08:01:42 pm »
The last few times I came over here, there was nothing "new" showing up when I clicked on the two "Show" options.

Having caught up on Brimstone & Bad Manners after having company* for a bit over a week and being "on vacation", I came over here to see if there was anything going on.

Both "Show" buttons are now working and there were three pages of "Unread Posts Since Last Visit" - so much to catch up on!

*Mom flew in for a visit because the brother that she lives with is going to be visiting the other side of the family this Thanksgiving, as there is some concern that one parent may not make it to the New Year...since that happened in 2016 with our dad, I understand completely.  And Mom is spending Thanksgiving with my younger sister, whose husband is out of the country for work until mid-December.  So we're seeing DD & her family and Mom has gotten to go visit other brother in San Antonio, too.  A nice series of visits for her.

Cooking / Re: Ingredients (and Dishes) You Loathe
« on: October 08, 2018, 12:33:41 pm »
I love Mexican food and the Tex-Mex & Arizona-Mex variations (have visited California and New Mexico, but I haven't lived there enough to try their regional variations and form a culinary opinion).  I cannot stand the slightly soapy taste with heat that I get from cilantro (leafy green bits in many salsas) as the soapy taste really doesn't appeal to me.  I understand that crushed leafy bits will have a different flavor than the uncrushed leafy bits (enzymes released by crushing change the chemical that tastes soapy) - but not many people are crushing the leaves in their kitchens...so - "soapy" taste to the fore.

I will try the salsa & chips at most restaurants - but if it doesn't appeal to me, I'll order some queso instead. The salsa is usually "free" but you have to pay for the queso (cheese dip) - I don't mind and if my son or husband are along - I have some help eating it.  If both are along or I'm out with DD & the grandkids, there won't be leftover queso.  If everyone (son, grandsons, daughter, husband, and son-in-law) - we order more queso when it runs out.

But I have been known to go to a new restaurant and knock half the menu out of consideration because they mention cilantro in the description of a dish.  VorGuy loves it when I hand him a plate of delicious food - but he isn't always happy to have to order a second plate for me because there turned out to be cilantro in a dish.

I've also learned to ask about salads - if they are made with "spring mix" or there is arugula in there, I'm going to ask for substitutions or order something else - that one is an actual allergy, though, so nobody asks for more details after I mention "I'm allergic to....".

Rectangular Longaberger basket - sized about what you might see on a kitchen counter with wooden spoons & such in it - now on my bathroom counter with the hair clippers, blow dryer, and curling iron (when I find it) in it to keep them together and NOT buried under other stuff.

Price?  It said 99 cents on the tag - but I got a senior discount - so for three things under a dollar, I spent about $2.50 by the time the sales tax at Goodwill was added back in.  The other items - a cute clear plastic mug with water (or something) between the two layers of plastic that is now in the freezer and a replacement lidded large double layer drinking glass with its own straw.  I keep getting more of these as they don't survive being knocked on the stone floor tiles in the kitchen very well.

And I hate to use one that is **** or messed up enough that anything can get between the inner liner and the outer shell and start to grow something urky.  So - I find a new one - I clean it well and toss the **** one or the one missing a small chunk of the outer shell.  If the inner liner cracks - it's gone before I can be asked if I washed it yet - it's easy enough to replace - if none are in the thrift store this week, wait until next week.

General Discussion / Re: My Ancient Keyboard Kindle Has Died
« on: September 09, 2018, 12:18:23 am »
I have an iPad with all the apps and an Android phone, with the apps.  I also have a new Kindle that I can read in a dark room because the screen is sorta lit.  I do make the font a little larger with that light than I do when I'm reading in daylight or a well lit room.

But when I want to read before bed and still be able to go to sleep in short time - I need a grayscale screen to read on - not a backlit color screen on a phone or an iPad.

Keep an eye out on Amazon, they've been having sales every so often...or check for refurbished readers direct from Amazon - better price, still has warranty.

We had our house up for sale in 2005.  We'd built it in 1998.  One lady touring the house was determined to pull up the carpet "to see the hard wood flooring underneath" no matter how many times I told her that we had built the house and there was only cement with carpet padding under the carpet.  She just wanted to pull up the carpet in a corner or in one of the closets "to be sure" after about the third time I told her and the real estate agent with her that there was no hardwood flooring in the house.

My own list?

At 61, if I ever go shopping for a new home:  no stairs, no swimming pool in my yard, no HOA (if at all possible - some places, it isn't possible), a relatively new roof & central heat & air systems, in fact - no major appliances or that were installed when the house was built unless the house is under five years old.  Too many issues with replacing a thirty year old hot water heater, dishwasher, stove/cooktop, wall oven & microwave combination, and the central heating & air systems for a two story house.  At least the roof replacement (after a hurricane) was completely done and mostly paid for by insurance...but it was not a fun few months while we waited in line behind the people who had no roofs on their houses or holes large enough that they had to have a new roof & not just repairs.  Space for my sewing & crafts room and supplies is also high on the list - but I might be willing to compromise on how much space I need sersus how much I would like to have...

But my husband might have a different list, I haven't asked him.  His list is so long that he doesn't plan to go house hunting again...he likes our current location & house too much to move.

But she doesn’t go around telling people to watch tv.  Although, after visiting people she has said to me, as an aside, “where was their tv?”

It's like how odd it was to me while visiting friends and there wasn't any reading material in the place. Not one book, magazine, or newspaper. Not even children's books or comics for their kids.

I like reading while the TV is on. ;D

I visited people when I was still in school who had only the newspaper for reading material and the TV Guide was the only reference material - at least, the only one that I saw being used...

I still shudder when I remember it.

I just checked my "Content & Devices" on Amazon - and discovered that I have not one, but two Anne collections - even at the 99 cent price point, I don't need a third one.

But looking at some of the covers, you get the idea that working with a naked model is fine with the photographers and artists - but working with someone who is not wearing any makeup is....inconceivable.

(Had to sneak that in, sorry, but it was the word that best conveyed what I wanted to say - and it might be considered funny, too.)

For those who have never read it or seen the movie - it's from The Princess Bride.

Mint chocolate flavored cookies or ice cream - I'm just tired of my husband's favorite flavor because it has become almost the only thing he buys.

Actual chocolate with mint layers (Andes or a few other good brands) are still quite edible - but not what the house has been flooded with whenever he has done the shopping.

Raspberry anything - it just doesn't taste or smell good to me.  I think it's the seeds - but I'm not sure as I don't want to eat any to see if I'm allergic because I just can't stand the taste.

VorGuy tells me when he expects to spend a while in the "reading room" or wants a crossword puzzle or two printed off to while away his time in the "reading room".  I don't have to spend nearly as much time in there...although as a teenager I found that it was almost the only place in the house to get any privacy...but that was with my parents & younger siblings in a two bathroom house.  With my bridegroom in a one bathroom house - that was not the room to choose for privacy.

I did announce when I was going in there - but mainly to keep down the amount of time with a small child pounding on the door & asking if I was coming out now...I was so glad once everyone was over six or seven years old.  Only the cat would try to open the door & come in to keep an eye on me after that and for some reason having the cat watch me wasn't nearly as unnerving.

Family / Re: Prudie: Baby named after **** star
« on: August 02, 2018, 11:51:31 am »
The only other famous name I can think of is John Holmes.

If you gave a baby the middle name "Sherlock" or "Mycroft", my guess would be that nobody would notice the "John" or possibly they'd think of "Watson" as the source.

In our house, when there is going to be an extended stay, we preface this with "I'm going to retire to the library".

Maybe I'm just an old prude, but why on earth does this need to be "announced" to anyone?

So that if there is a phone call for them on the house phone, you can say that you'll have them call back "at their earliest opportunity"?  Instead of having to go hunting while carrying the wireless phone around the house and then finding that they are STILL "not accepting calls"?

My dad made chocolate covered peanuts, stirring a little peanut butter into the melted chocolate first - they were great...but I'm one of those people who finds chocolate coated raisins to be "not to my taste", so you can have them.

How little is little for the peanut butter to chocolate ratio?

Sounds interesting. I'm not fond of peanuts but may try it with other type of nuts.

I have no idea - he'd add a large spoonful or two until the chocolate looked right and handled the way he wanted it to.  I wonder if almonds & almond butter would work the same way?
