No, we cannot order you items from Amazon (or any other online retail store) via the phone.

At first she was transferred to me because she wanted to learn how to "order movies" and lived near our branch. So I told her I could do it on the phone.

Nope- it was not from our catalog. She wanted to purchase some movies- not "rent" them.

I had other customers waiting (yes, at the library in front of me)- so I told her so and told her to come in person next week.

But we certainly are not middlepersons. We cannot even take credit card numbers via phone. I could not even locate the exact items she wanted- let alone order them.

She thought we could do everything for her. Sadly, we cannot.

We get a lot of these, along with, "fill out my resume/legal paperwork" and "teach me to use a computer." We do run computer classes, but I cannot spend half an hour of a desk shift teaching someone how the mouse works and what "google it" means.

Family / Re: Care & Feeding: Babysitter drinking on the job

I think they should confirm that it was the babysitter, but I also think that she should be terminated if it was. Drinking without the parents express consent while on the job is not OK.

The whole thing is confusing at this point. The prosecutors are claiming that they reached an unwritten deal to drop the charges if he forfeited the $10,000 bond and did community service, and that this is not unusual in the case of a non-violent first offender. His side is claiming he's exonerated. The record has been sealed. I really don't know who to believe.

There were kids who definitely knew their parents were cheating their way into school, according to this article. And from the sound of things, Olivia Jade at least knew there was something fishy going on even if she didn't know all the details.

Singer says he facilitated for more than 750 families. This is going to be very, very messy.

I think it becomes more complicated if you consider that this has been going on for seven years. Presumably, a number of kids graduated under this system. Do the universities yank their degrees retroactively? I know  some schools have revoked degrees for various reasons, including falsified transcripts. Stanford University revoked an MBA that had been granted to Mathew Martoma ten years earlier, after they found out he'd  failed to mention that he had been expelled from Harvard Law School after forging a  transcript.

I agree that the kids should be expelled- while I'm sympathetic with the Huffman-Macy child and also with any others who were genuinely trying and didn't know, they still got in via fraud. Not their faults, but they cannot be allowed to stay now that it's known.

I'm sorry for Huffman's daughter as well. It sounds like the kid was working in good faith and doing her best, but that wasn't enough for her parents- Macy wasn't arrested but he did know about the scam.

Books / Re: What are you reading?

The Rose Legacy by Jessica Day George and The Restless Girls by by Jessie Burton are ones I just finished this week and loved. George's book is great for any horse-crazy girl, and Burton's is a new and fascinating spin on The Twelve Dancing Princesses. Loved both.

The latter one sounds very interesting! I'm into fairytale retellings. I know George has also done some of those.

George did a YA series that starts out with a version of The Twelve Dancing Princesses. I liked it, but not as much as Rose Legacy.

I think Lori Loughlin is going to take a much bigger hit down the line career-wise than Felicity Huffman. Her entire image is based on being nice wholesome Aunt Becky and she parlayed that into a career on Hallmark (not mocking the channels, but it's a very wholesome kind of place. Think of what they did to the Aurora Teagarten mysteries- Aurora got boiled down to Ye Olde Quirkee Girl Detective instead of being the stealth badass she was on the page.) Hallmark has already dumped Loughlin, and she's going to have a very hard time finding another gig she is so well suited for.

My favorite Bristow is Calico Palace, and I also loved Celia Garth.

She may be forgotten nowadays, but Anya Seton’s books were classic. Her “Katherine”, about John of Gaunt’s mistress-then-wife, thrilled me as a teenager.

I reread Katherine not too long ago, and it has held up very well.

There's also Gwen Bristow, though hers swing more towards the historical end than the romantic IMO. But still very good.

Wedding Etiquette / Re: Couple banned non-vegans from their wedding

Demanding that all your guests become vegan or else not attend is utterly ridiculous.

I do think that if she's paying she can decide what she wants, invite who she wants, and deal with the consequences.

That said, she can get stuffed. I have soy and nut allergies plus medical conditions that mean permanent veganism is not an option, nor is being vegetarian. I would be willing to eat vegan at a wedding, but I'm not compromising my health so she can feel smug.

And also, if they're providing financial support, she'd better be ready to lose that, because you can't trash people on one end and expect them to pay for you on the other.

Netflix says,

Quote
Once you have an active Netflix membership, you can have six (6) devices registered to your account at any given time, and you may stream up to two (2) movies or TV shows at the same time by default. There is also an option to upgrade to four (4) streams at the same time from the Your Account page.

So you could share it with your parents if you wanted to. Whereas here, it sounds like YS is sharing the password with a lot of other people and the LW isn't able to get access to the service she's paying for when she wants to use it.

I think at this point LW1 should break up with this guy. He's had four years and he's not on board with more than vague handwaving. Definitely don't buy a house with him!
