Approaching a point in which new characters can be added.  Anyone interested?

Game has started--I have a couple NPCs in place that I'd happily give to someone who'd be interested in playing.

Would anyone be interested in joining a rather old school (AD&D 2nd ed--don't worry if you don't have the rule set, it's more important to roleplay and I can help with the dice) game?

Accidental Adventurers

Premise of the opening adventure:
Not all adventurers dreamed of such a life from early childhood--some adventurers are accidentally made--greatness is thrust upon them.

Residents of an archipelago off the coast of the large island of Calandia have been kidnapped, captured by slavers and destined for a market far away from home. The story for these, however, is different: a terrible storm and shipwreck strand them on an island where survival will require that they rise to the occasion and become adventurers.

Then, would they return to the ordinary path of villagers or choose instead to fight the evils of the larger world they have now seen?

General Life / Re: Dear Prudie: Men don't wash dishes, and angry neighbor

On the clean up, I don't think it's really ok to lecture one's guests, and I really find the idea of soliciting clean-up assistance from guests off-putting.  When someone decides to host, the preparation for the party and the clean up are the host's responsibility (freely offered assistance from a guest may or may not be accepted depending on host's preferences).

The 7yo and the angry neighbor ... Wow.  OK, the neighbor may be going over the top, but how long have these neighborhood children been playing in *his* yard, ringing doorbells and otherwise making themselves a nusiance *after* being told to stay away/off the property and leave the guy alone?  Has this been going on for the entire two years (thereabouts) from when he moved in and made it clear that he did not want the children on his property?  I can see how it could progress from him notifying the parents and finding children *still* pestering him to thinking that if he made it unpleasant (discussing details of serial killers or reading The Jungle excerpts) that the children (or is it only "Dennis"--the son of the LW--who is still pestering the man?) would leave him alone.  I agree with the neighbor that the situation is primarily the LW's fault.  A 7yo is not too young to understand "doesn't belong to you" and to stay away from the neighbor's house, and the LW should be more concerned with her actual responsibility to control her child than to try to "persuade" the neighbor into being more accepting of trespassing.  And yes, I'm a mom, and I think that if the man has lived in the neighborhood for two years, that it is at least 23.5 months past time that she rein in her child's behavior.

I do not believe potatoes should be a part of breakfast.

Has it been very wet there?  We had a stretch with about 9 inches of rain falling in a very short period of time (lots of local flooding--my daughter was trying to go somewhere to meet up and had to turn around three times before she found a path that the road wasn't covered in water).  That much rain could maybe disrupt other habitats (like the toads'--if their normal place is too wet).  Otherwise, I've got nothing.

I don't believe it is true.

But I love it.  This is the kind of thing that got a lot of us interested in EH to begin with!

Did anyone else think about the Titanic Wedding story?  Also clearly untrue, but, oh, what fun!
Now that you mention it--yes, it does seem like it's a story from the the POV of the awful bride (Jennifer?) from the Titanic story .. minus the overt sinking ship theme.

The thought that crosses my mind is that a port-a-potty is something of a limited resource--there's only a certain # of uses before it needs to be serviced, and depending on the size of the camping group (for a week), their own usage might well be near the limit of uses, so I do think it's fair to bar usage by other people who aren't part of the group.

Lilac Girls

It's on the longer side (close to 500 pages), but it is amazing.  It's a fictionalized account of true events during WWII connected to Ravensbruck.  I usually do not like multiple narrators, but this works--three narrators, very different women whose voices are easy to distinguish.  All three are presented in first person narrative, again a technique that I normally don't care for.  Yet, the narrative works, and I have been moved by the story that was told.

Self-appointed interstate police.

Yes, the posted limit is 70, so theoretically that should be the maximum speed.  Realistically, the normal speed of traffic runs between 75-80 (state police don't really pull anyone over under 85 unless unusual circumstances weather-wise).  Until you get Mr Self-Appointed Interstate Police who is driving in the left (fast) lane at exactly 70 mph, except for the moment that he accidentally hit 71 and immediately hit the brakes.  No one was in front of him, no one was trying to move into his lane, just "oops, speeding"  ::)  So you'd crawl past a semi (probably traveling about 68-69mph), hit a gap where 2-3 cars would pass on the right, crawl past another semi, and rinse and repeat, until finally able to get to be one of the small group passing on the right.  It should not take over a mile to complete the pass of a single semi.

Vet found adult teeth erupting, and he's putting her age as 4 months, as she's a little small for her age going by the teeth.  She weighs 3.8 pounds, and he doesn't like to spay under 5 pounds.  So we went ahead and scheduled for a month from now, when she'll also be due for her second round of vaccinations.  I think once we get the fleas and worms under control, she'll be at the appropriate weight so we won't need to wait any longer (and hopefully she won't go into heat). FeLV and FIV negative, so that's good news.

I've discovered that this may be unpopular, but I prefer cats to kittens.

I adopted intentionally four cats, who at the time they were adopted were between 2 and 6.5 years old.

Then a couple years ago, my middle son found a cat in front of our house who ended up becoming my fifth cat.  When she showed up, she was 10-12 months old.  And I thought "well, that's kind of young, but she's almost grown up".

Now my youngest son brought in a kitten.  I'm not sure how old this one is, but she's going to my vet on Monday, so I'll have a better idea.

I posted a picture in the pet thread, but honestly, I'm just not that crazy about kittens, but I *love* cats.

Friday when I came home from work, my youngest son was outside with a kitten who'd followed him home from the park.  Her name is now Mabel, and she'll be going to see my vet on Monday.  Right now, she is living upstairs (where my sons are) while the other five are downstairs.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

We'll start on introductions after she's gotten a clean bill of health.  Not really sure of her age .. youngest son doesn't think he's seen adult teeth, which is a hint.

I'm an odd one--I prefer the cat stage of life to the kitten stage.  Youngest son now has a job that he says he will use toward Mabel's care (although I may well have to front it for him, because the spay can't wait until he's saved up, and the job is pretty new).

OK, I think this Golden Deer Classics outfit must be trying for the most bizarre look with Anne series book covers:

Here's a boxed set with a really disturbing cover picture

But then it looks like they have trouble with anything that has a female main character.

Who is this?? Certainly not Sara Crewe
