We went to Rome last year. Central Rome with the main classical sites is fairly compact. I think it took about 30 minutes to walk from St Peters to the Pantheon. Just round the corner from the Pantheon is the shop which makes the papal robes.
The Vatican museums were wonderful but very crowded during the day. Some companies offer private evening tours but they are very expensive. The Protestant cemetery where Keats is buried is beautiful, and right next to a cat sanctuay. Just outside Rome are the ruins of Ostia, the old Roman port, which are fascinating.
Hope you have a geeat trip.
