Updates and Announcements / Re: Hello? Hello?

I keep checking here every once in a while, to see what people are doing.  I am saddened that there isn’t much discussion going on.

Wow! Yes, 6 inches would have prevented me from getting to work also.

I remember the one winter when we lived in an apartment house, I hated having to climb down the stairs from our third-floor apartment, because they were outside stairs.

Lynn,

I did not mean to interrupt your grocery delivery thread.  I like reading about other people’s adventures with them.

Lynn, that order was the first time we had used Instacart, and he had not clicked on ‘no substitutes’, not yet seeing the need for it then.  He now clicks on it every time, because we can be quite picky about getting certain brand names.  And have had the wrong groceries delivered once, which thankfully he caught right away because he had not ordered any sodapop.

I also had one Amazon order that I assume was misdelivered. The day it was scheduled for delivery, I sat on the couch all day waiting.  Then when I checked for the status late in the day, I was shocked to see it saying ‘delivered’, when it hadn’t been.  I called them so I could talk to an actual person, and of course they tried to say that I had missed it.  But of course if I had missed it, then why does it say it was delivered?!?  Eventually he promised to resend the order, which I did get that time around.  I am happy to say that all of my subsequent packages have all been delivered correctly (knock on wood).

The one place I have had delivery issues with is Grubhub.  At first, everything had been fine.  Then I started getting incomplete orders delivered, and refused to send someone out to get the rest of the order. The only thing that they would do is offer a $5 coupon for my next order, which doesn’t help for an incomplete dinner that day.  That happened three times.  My break with them was when a $70 dinner order was delivered to the wrong address (I assume).  When the order showed up as delivered and we had seen no-one near our house, I immediately called about it.  At first they said I should wait a little longer for the food to get there, but I argued that if it had been delivered and we didn’t have it, it wasn’t coming to us.  I finally got them to refund the money, but the only recompense offered was a $5 coupon for the next order, which should be emailed in a few days.

We have since switched to DoorDash and UberEats.

My husband also uses Instacart for delivery on a lot of our groceries. It is very convenient, because I am homebound, and he is partially disabled and walks with a cane. So he does not like walking around the grocery stores if he doesn’t have to.  He has had good luck with the deliveries, making sure that it will be at a time that he is home to take the bags into the kitchen. And the delivery people have the good luck of the ramp to the front door instead of dealing with the steps

Usually, the only time he goes in to the grocery store is to pick up prescriptions from their pharmacy. At that point, he will sometimes pick up special items that cannot be ordered through Instacart.

I have gotten into the habit of ordering certain items from Walmart for delivery to our house.  I order my incontinance supplies from Walmart because the particular ones I want are not available at the supermarket, or even at the local Walmart stores.   I guess that they are only available by delivery.  So when I am ordering supplies, I do go looking for other items I might want or need.

I also like that both Walmart and Amazon allow me to send things to my sister in Hawaii.  I recently found and sent sis some 100%cotton bras from Walmart that she cannot find at her local store (I can’t find them at my stores either).  I will keep track of that item, because both of us are allergic to Nylon.

We just need to remember to check the “No substitutions “, because I am very picky about certain brands of food.  One of our first orders, I wanted Italian sausages of a certain Italian brand.  They substituted Johnsonville Polish sausage.  That was so NOT the same, and I wound up giving it away instead of throwing it in the trash (I despise that brand).

So thankfully we have been having good luck with our grocery deliveries.

Lynn, I am happy that you are having mostly good luck with your grocery deliveries.

I want the mansion that you see at the end of the movie Skyfall, which I think in the movie was called “Skyfall”.  I loved all of the woodwork, bookcases, shelves, and in general the decorations before he burnt the mansion down.  Wish I could have gone on a tour of the entire house.

And I agree, I would love to have Bag End.  I have mentioned to my husband that if we win the lottery, I want to build a hobbit hole. ;DI have mentioned to my husband that if we win the lottery, I want to build a hobbit hole. ;D

(Had to fix things that Auto-correct thinks is better  :P )

A couple of decades ago, I came down with severe stomach flu, after having a breakfast of fried eggs and hotdogs.  Was throwing up for 2-3 days if i ate or drank anything besides ginger ale.

It took 3 years before I could eat either eggs or hotdogs.

I  was given an e-reader for Easter seven years ago, and I wasn't sure how well I would like an e-reader (of course I didn't say anything to the people who got me the gift). I do love physical books, but I find the e-reader is so much easier for travel. My basic e-reader holds up to 1,000 books - way easier to bring with me and less packing than books themselves

DH and I love paper books, we have three bookcases in the living room, three bookcases in the bedroom, and two bookcases in the computer room.

But when DH gave me his used kindle when he upgraded, I found that it was very useful when riding the bus.  I didn’t have to worry about putting the bookmark back in, if I finished a book, I could pull up another right away.  And now with my MS getting worse, it is getting harder to hold books open.

And I am getting free books from Project Gutenberg (pre-copyright books).  I also subscribe to two different lists that offer free downloads of books  that last for a day (or two), books I might not have read otherwise.

Usually for special events at my inlaws' house, I'm the one who ends up making the whipped cream, mostly because it's simple enough that even I can't mess it up.

Actually, I managed to mess it up.  I was helping a friend make whipped cream for desert for guests, and did not have a good understanding of “stiff peaks”, so I .... made butter.  Oops.  Her desert survived the lack of whipped cream, and she wound up with a lot of very sweet butter.

Books / Re: Silly reasons you didn't finish a book
« on: June 29, 2018, 02:23:32 pm »
I don’t know whether I will get a lot of grief about this or not, but one of the books I had to put down was “Game of Thrones“. I put it down because I was about a third of the way through, and realize I was not interested in finding out the fate of ANY of the characters.  I was just bored with the book.

Now if I find if I am bored with a book, or dislike reading it further, I will go to the end of the book and read the last five pages or so, so that I have a conclusion for the book and don’t need to worry about it anymore.  What is sad is that sometimes I can’t even get through those last five pages.

Oh, and just remembered the book “practical magic“, the movie was great so I tried reading the book, and the book was horrid and I was not able to finish it.

I love the Cheetos commercial where the father is checking for Cheetos cheese traces, and at the end a cat meows and has traces, and he says “when did we get a cat?”

Every time I see that commercial, I have to laugh.

“ The Crochet Stitch Bible: The Essential Illustrated Reference Over 200 Traditional and Contemporary Stitches (Artist/Craft Bible Series) Spiral-bound “

This is the book I picked out for my husband to buy me from Amazon.  I have been trying out some of the stitches that look nifty that I have never used before.

Entertainment / Re: Doctor Who (SPOILERS, sweetie)
« on: June 10, 2018, 06:56:08 pm »
I am a big fan of Dr. boo, knowing all of the actors from Hartnell through to Capaldi, except for the bad movie that I really dislike.

Like many others, my favorite is Tom Baker. He was my first doctor. But I was happy when our PBS station started running all of the old Doctor Who is starting with Hartnell.   What is really sad is that so many of Patrick Troughton‘s episodes were lost, so that I was unable to watch all of them.   My mothers favorite doctor was John Pertwee.

I also really loved the 50th anniversary episode with Tennant and Smith, and the war doctor ( what are you going to do assemble a cabinet at me?!?!?).

Maybe you should take winterlights suggestion, and look up nearby public pools or parks for them to go to instead of your house and pool.

And I agree with the others that you should make up rules from the HOA to prevent them from mooching off of you.

General Discussion / Re: Landlines
« on: June 09, 2018, 08:56:54 pm »
Like many others, we have a landline through our cable/Internet provider. I am happy to have the landline because it is a larger phone to handle, and because we do not have cell reception in about half of the rooms in the house.

I was in the bedroom, trying to send a cell message, and it kept being refused because it could not connect to the cell network. When I walked into the hall, then it was able to send the message.  I also have a problem with a lot of cell phones, whenever I touch my husband iPhone, I do something bad to it that he needs to correct. I have a nice low tech flip phone that satisfies me.
