I think that these celebrities (which professional athletes are) should have the right, on their own time, to speak about their political views/stances/leanings without consequences at their job---this is actually special treatment because, depending on your political stance and how you said it advertised it, that in and of itself could get people fire from their job. However, like in most jobs, I think the owners/CEO have a right to express what conduct is okay and what is not okay. In this instance, the employer has not given the employees an ultimatum but instead did give them the choice of staying in the locker room. This action, if some choose to take it, will also be noticed just as kneeling/sitting is already. I honestly think it's a good compromise by the employer.
Just like any other job (though many are not nearly as lucrative), it's the employees choice to continue working there if the rules no longer make sense to them.
