Entertainment / Re: Let's talk about the Oscar Nominees for 2019
« on: February 02, 2019, 09:56:46 am »
I've seen Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody but I don't expect them to really win. I do think that Lady Gaga is going to get an Oscar for song but that's going to be it. I'd like to be wrong, but the Oscars are less about the movies people like and more about the high brow art films. Even with nominating a few that people liked, I don't think there's going to be a change.

Books / Re: What did you just finish?
« on: September 17, 2018, 07:52:36 pm »
It's a craft book but I just finished Romancing the Beat by Gwen Hayes as research for my NaNoWriMo project. I'm writing a romance novel for the first time (eeeepppp) and it was suggested to me by fellow writers. It's a super fast read and so easy to understand. She's got a ton of movie and music references mixed in and it is so relatable. I highly recommend it for writers (and readers too!).

Work Issues / Re: New NFL Rules re: National Anthem

I like Nike's campaign, but not their choice of Kaep to be the "face" of it. IMO, so many others have made the ultimate sacrifice, and his so-called sacrifice just doesn't compare.

As for people destroying their Nike apparel, that's just silly. I have a pair of Nike athletic shoes in my closet which still have a good 2 or 3 years of wear left in them. I'm going to continue to wear them for as long as they hold up, but I won't buy that brand again. It has been my tradition for a few years now to buy my 3 oldest grandchildren new tennis shoes after Christmas. I won't be purchasing Nike for them.

So unless you’re dead, sacrificing your career, your financial security, your standing, getting death threats etc doesn’t count? Ok.

He chose to protest in a manner that was sure to be seen as controversial and to draw outrage, and his sacrifices were of his own making. As for financial security, I'm sure his contract with Nike is highly lucrative.

He's given away a lot of his money to charity and I bet he'll do the same with his Nike contract. Also, all protests can be categorized as controversial and drawing attention so what's wrong with his? Oh, right, do it but make sure it doesn't interfere with football. Do it but make sure it's what I want you to protest. Do it but don't you dare call out an issue that is effecting the people of your community that you don't want to hear about. That's what I'm hearing from you and all other people protesting Nike. Nike went with someone we should look up to, just like they did when they first started their campaign 30 years ago, and a lot of people had an issue with Michael Jordan being the face of it too.

General Discussion / Re: My Ancient Keyboard Kindle Has Died

My Kindle Keyboard died a while ago. Got a Fire, didn't like it because it was too tablet-y. Got a Kindle Paperwhite instead, love it, and it's like the Kindle Keyboard with the Keyboard.

General Discussion / Re: The British Monarchy

Poesie made a comment down in the political thread about touching and/or bowing to the queen, and it reminded me that while I don't spend much time following the monarchy I have a few opinions. But what I'd really love would be a discussion from people in countries tied in some way to the UK like Australia, New Zealand, etc.

I have for a long time loathed Prince Charles. In my opinion he is a bit nutty but truly slutty. (The tampon thing turned my stomach.) He's also a decided ick for me. I'd love to see him put off to the side when the queen dies and Prince William take over as head. Do you think there is any chance of that happening? I'd guess not because he's waited for so long and apparently wants it very badly.

I am also amazed at how grown up Prince Harry seems since his wedding. It's almost as if he doesn't even look like the same person. I am full of admiration as I am at William and Kate. If anything can not just save but completely revive the monarchy it is probably those four young people.

The...tampon thing???

A private conversation between Prince Charles and Camilla while he was still married to Princess Diana. He said he wanted to be reincarnated as one of Camilla’s tampons. Should have remained private joke but ended up in all the newspapers.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/how-camillagate-tapes-exposed-secret-10958350

...well...if there was ever a question that Prince Charles is not Prince Phillip's son, that joke kind of kills it. That horrible humor could only be inherited.  ;D

I think that, for Charles, it was drummed into his mind at a very young age that you do not abdicate. Ever. It is running away from your responsibilities and you do not want to be like your great-uncle. However, I think that if it was a mental or physical health issue, he would step aside but not for anything else. Also, I think he's going to live for a long while. His mother and father are both in their early to mid 90s, his grandmother (the Queen Mother) lived to 101 or 102, and, save for lung cancer, his grandfather probably would have lived longer too. We probably won't get William as king until he's around the same age or older than Charles is now.

Suggestions / Re: The "See List"

It is the same way here. However, I do disagree with not liking it. I feel like it's the same thing as liking a post on FB. It's not going to influence how I interact with a poster at all or make me feel bad if I make a post and a majority disagree with it. It's just there as a way of information.

General Discussion / Re: The "Unpopular Opinions" Thread

Here's another one from me - I don't like the All Star break. It's stupid, it doesn't make sense for 1 game to determine where home field advantage goes for the World Series (should be based on the team's record), and, more importantly, I DON'T GET CUBS BASEBALL until Thursday. /grumble I don't care that 3 Cubs are going, I want to watch their games, damnit.

I don't think that the All Star Game determines home filed advantage for the World Series anymore.  I think it's just for funsies now.  As God intended it.

Please let's try to remember to state our opinions (which I am loving) in that form -- e.g., "I loathe XYZ with every cell in my being; it absolutely makes me gag" as opposed to conclusory labeling like "XYZ is disgusting fake food."  We can still use strong, colorful language without insulting anyone who happens to like XYZ.

... I completely missed that. Oops. I still don't like it but that reason will have to go elsewhere. Yay for funsies? I wonder how their ratings are doing. If it's get low enough, think they'll cancel it? ;D Can I dream of that at least?

Republic of Doyle on Netflix. It's about a father-son PI duo and their wacky family. It's awesome and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a cozyish mystery with family dynamics.

I don't like Star Wars (I don't dislike it, it's just I won't choose to watch it given a choice), but out of all the Star Wars films, I think the sequel trilogy (so far) is the best.
I also don't like LotR or Harry Potter (or, as I called it, Star Wands.)
Game of Thrones is misery **** with no redeeming qualities.
Animated movies are getting more and more stupid, and I fear its audience will follow suit.
There hasn't been much good anime produced in the last ten years, it's almost parodying itself with an overabundance of tropes.
I *liked* the Mandarin twist in Iron Man 3.
Hot coffee is nasty, iced coffee is tasty.
I don't like the Beatles. It's not that they're just overrated, it's that I feel that their music is bland and uninspired.
I would be fine if I never saw a red velvet *anything* ever again, yet it's in *everything* now.
Dragons, dinosaurs, and zombies are all tropes who can make their exit, please.

I dunno - Jim Butcher's wizard, Harry Dresden, pulled a zombie dinosaur out of the hat trick that worked rather well, but you have to be creative to come up with a *twist* to make those three work well, they've been overused lately.

And it was a dinosaur that was appropriate for the setting at the time considering Sue was the big exhibit.

Here's another one from me - I don't like the All Star break. Don't Starbucks let you bring your own cup? I know some other places do. You even get a discount.

I believe so - I think they'll even steam the inside of your cup to clean it before they refill it.

They will steam if you're getting a hot drink or you ask. If you're getting a cold drink, they will wash it out with cold water to make the mug colder. My neighborhood Starbucks does it without me asking, but I'm a regular with a known drink even if I have a brain fart and don't order it right.  ;D

A Song of Fire and Ice / Game of Thrones is highly overrated, depressing, and the majority of the characters are a mix of arrogant, airheaded, or just downright nasty. The only redeeming one is Khal Drogo and... well, yeah.

One can like the Twilight Saga and Lord of the Rings. It is not an either/or, despite what some of the fringes of my friends group believes. One of the many reasons they're the fringe - we operate on a 'don't yuck others yum' rule. The fringe violates it, a lot, and we just mostly gave up on them. Life's too short.

Pineapple and pepperoni is the best combo of pizza toppings.  ;D

I actually have my dream house... it's within walking distance of the downtown suburb area and a train. It's super close to other public transportation - I cross the tracks to get to the bus stop - and the library is only another two / two and a half blocks away. There's also a Starbucks and a Jewel on my side of the tracks so... I'm really all set. I have simple needs - good WiFi so I can reliably play World of Warcraft, walking distance to public transport and/or grocery store (coffee is a plus!), and well kept sidewalks so I won't fall and break my nose like old suburb.

Old suburb - sidewalks were terrible. Out walking my dog one day, missed there was a step up due to the sidewalk being uneven, and fell. Broke my nose, thought I broke my hand (contusions are painful, and I was not a happy camper.

Humor / Re: Wrong number stories
« on: June 28, 2018, 07:03:05 pm »

they wanted me to swap numbers with them, so that their cards were correct. :o

Is that even possible? I mean, do phone companies actually do that? I have never heard of that. Granted, I live in the USA- so the UK may have different rules. But that is still a very entitled request worth of the Special Snowflakes thread at best- at worst, the Harry Potter one, since I do not think it is possible.

I know that we can take our number with us if we move within the same exchange, but I've no idea whether it was possible to swap two numbers over...  I never thought to find out because my attitude was "nope; never gonna happen".

If you go outside your area, you will lose the number unless you go to VOIP service like Vonage (spelling?). We have it and, to be honest, we have the phone off the hook half the time because we only really get calls from telemarketers. It's just that we've had this number since... well, since we moved into the suburb some... ok, a very long time ago. I was in 4th grade and that was the late 80s / early 90s.

General Discussion / Re: What are you super fussy about?
« on: June 26, 2018, 04:29:20 pm »
When going on a road trip, I'm very particular about making a detailed packing list and packing everything into the car just the way I want it packed.  Multiply this by ten if the trip involves crossing any international borders (like our summer fishing trip to Canada).

Also, when going on a road trip, if the destination is a particular place, I like to minimize the stops between home and that place.  If the point of the trip is to stop at a bunch of different places and go sight-seeing, that's fine, but if (like the aforementioned trip to Canada) the destination is a 5+ hour drive away, I try to stop only when necessary.  My first stop will be a couple miles from my house (to top off the gas tank, wash the car, and get sodas & snacks for the trip).  After that, if I can drive 200+ miles without stopping, I'll do so.

I see you and I are of a similar mind when it comes to road trips. ;D I'd rather the driver just go until they can't, we take a nice long stop, and then we go some more. I love going on road trips with 2 friends who we jump in the car, drive for six hours, then stop for food unless a restroom is badly needed, and then go the rest of the way (usually another 4 to 5 hours). It's the stopping every little bit unless it's been mentioned that we are that gets to me.
