Trump Cancels Summit with NK

Uh.  I wasn't really expecting that this morning considering it was supposed to be one of the major diplomatic feathers in the Administration's cap come November.

Trump to Kim:

"You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God that they never have to be used."

Nuclear threats are back on the table.  So awesome.

Honestly, I am not surprised. Bringing us closer to war... not diplomatic solutions.

If he'd announced he was resigning, joining a convent and taking up underwater basket weaving, that would have been a surprise.

This? Not so much.

(TBH I've been expecting this summit to not take place from the moment it was announced because I assumed one or other of them would find some excuse to pull out. I...may need to work on my cynicism a bit.)

In the most childish way possible, too.

Quote
We were informed that the meeting was requested by North Korea, but that to us is totally irrelevant.
If it is irrelevant, don't say it. If it's relevant, then make a point. He's making a childish dig at NK

Quote
Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting
Trump fully participated in the escalating hostility by continuing to openly mock Jong Un through twitter.

Quote
You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used.
This dick measuring contest has to end. I don't care how many more nucs we have - it does not take many nuclear bombs to be devastating.

Quote
I felt a wonderful dialogue was building up between you and me, and ultimately, it is only that dialogue that matters.
NO it is NOT because you are not a freaking dictator.

Freaking childish.

In recent weeks, I had seen some commentators that I respect try to give him some credit for pursuing this summit.

All I could do was roll my eyes and mutter "when pigs fly."

Trump has been a known quantity - and entirely predictable - to anyone who cared to pay attention, long before his TV show.

He's a spoiled trust fund baby who ran through his daddy's money and then became a con artist.  He screws over everyone who's ever tried to support him. He ritually humiliates everyone who strikes an agreement with him. He sows chaos and ruins everything he touches. Everything he's ever done has been absolutely true to form.

I know plenty of well-intentioned people who voted for him, thinking he was so incompetent that the system and the conservative establishment would be able to keep him in line, and he'd just be a figurehead.

They underestimated the infectious power of chaos.

I can't say I'm surprised. I understand people wanting to give him credit, in part to not appear like they're automatically hating even potentially positive things he does. But I think it's very much predictable because both their behaviour up to this point has been so irrational - shooting childish insults back and forth, then suddenly they were going to be allies? It's like middle school - enemies buddying up, probably swon't last long because the irrationality of what made them decide to talk meant it could be disrupted by just about anything - no stable foundation.

I overheard something on MPR (Minnesota Public Radio) that seemed to sum things up - Trump doesn't care whether politicians like him. He doesn't care what the rules are. And since his party has so far been reluctant to cross the aisle to meet with Democrats to take action about the hundreds of illegal things that he has done, nothing will change.

He *does* care what his supporters think, and appeals to their emotional side of the brain, which clouds the rational side of the brain. I keep hoping for a tipping point or that the Republicans will realise just how badly Trump is hurting their election chances and that they'll take action, but they seem to be more interested in just quitting than doing something about it.

Not that I think Mike Pence will be any better... and I would hope he'd get taken down, too... but then that leaves us Paul Ryan, and... good lord.

Can't we just make Uncle Joe president somehow? And Obama as his vice-president? I realise Obama wasn't perfect, but I never woke up wondering if we were going to get nuked today because of a dumbass tweet.

Exactly. I was not a fan of Clinton, for both policy and personal reasons. But even back during the election, I told somebody,

"Look, Clinton is going to try to turn the US into something like France. That's not what I want, but at least France is a civilized democracy. A 4-year vacation to France isn't   the worst thing that could happen to anybody.

Trump wants turn us into North Korea. There's no coming back from that."

Now look. The forced public displays of "patriotism." The longing for a military parade in his honor. The blatant diversion of public funds to his own businesses and family.

The only reason he has a beef with Kim Jong Un is that he's jealous.

Man, I heard that and started laughing my ass off.... here we were all afraid things would go well because a tour in South Korea is usually the only way to escape a state-side base. So, uh, no real contribution to the discussion. Just apologizing.... peace means spending the rest of my career here :'( :'( :'( :P

(I don't want a war with NK, I'm crazy.. not psychotic)

I, like others, felt like this was only a matter of time. Plus, he wanted to pull out first (soooo many jokes, will not go there) as he was worried that NK would pull the plug and he'd look foolish. Dude, you minted a freaking coin before the meeting ever took place! The WH gift shop was selling them at discount yesterday. Probably today too.

So... woo, back to thinking we're all gonna die. Also, I would take Pence or Ryan over this dumpster fire, which means we're really in trouble if I think either of those two would be okay. However, considering Ryan is retiring, can he still be put in place? He's still got the gavel and all, but now I'm curious. Also, Pence, if he got into power, wouldn't pull a Gerald Ford.

Now it looks like they're just going to go forward with it anyways?

What was the point of that official letter cancelling it if they are going forward with it anyways?

The U.S. is looking absolutely ridiculous.

And the stupid coins putting us on the same level and NK. My husband told me to get off the internet for a few days because it was stressing me out lol
