TinyKittens and Shelly Roche
« on: May 23, 2018, 02:44:44 pm »
I'd love to have this discussion in which we can share our mutual love of TinyKittens.com on an ongoing basis. For those who are not familiar, TK was started by Shelly Roche, an American who married a Canadian and now lives in Langley, BC, Canada, a rural area outside Vancouver. She started feeding a colony of feral cats in a nearby area, a place now termed the Happy Forest. It has grown into a huge worldwide phenomenon as her efforts have expanded to include the spaying/neutering of 91 percent of this 200+ cats colony, management and assistance of other colonies, savior of mothers and kittens, an astonishing adoption rate of formal ferals, and much more. If you have ever wanted to believe that small bits of help in one corner of the world can and do influence events and people far beyond that corner then Shelly is the person who can do just that.

Right now, she has four of her own (the teens and the so-called Miracle Kitten, Cassidy), an ancient tom named Grandpa Mason who has turned into a major feline celebrity, three adult former ferals looking for new homes, one adult feral who isn't happy with humans and will be released to her friends as soon as her spay heals, and two very bonded mothers with nine kittens, one of whom has a cleft palate (and whom Shelly feeds every two hours) who has won my heart and thousands of others.

So ... after all that, who else is addicted to TK? I am hoping this thread will stay and be added to as the cats in her care come in, get helped, and go to new homes or to their home in the forest much better. Please feel free to add your own updates or favorite adoptee pages.

Yesterday or today some of the kittens met Grandpa Mason! At first, he appeared to be a bit uncertain since it's been a while but he warmed up quickly to their antics. I love this!

Update on tiny Aura, the cleft palate kitten. Yesterday she bit off and swallowed 4.5 inches of her feeding tube. She was rushed to the emergency vet, still very playful and happy despite the inappropriate snack, and it was decided to see it it would work itself out her, um, backside. Unfortunately, no. About an hour ago she was taken into surgery to see if they can remove it via an endoscopic procedure. Shelly noted that this procedure is the least invasive and least risky way to remove it before it can cause complications. Even though the procedure will only take 5-10 minutes, it still is risky due to Aura's tiny size and the anesthesia.

I am, like so many, caught up in this and I hope, hope, she comes through. I cannot bear the thought of her not making it.

AND . . . she came through with flying colors!

Has anyone else here been following Shelly's newest feral Hyatt, the blind cat who is now about halfway between ferocious hisses and loving the scritches she is handing out?

It's just amazing how much goes on there. I think I know more about the life and participants of TinyKittens than I do my own family. Hyatt, the feral blind cat, has been treated and can see again! He will be returning to the Happy Forest soon. And Princess Consuela got adopted into a family that is apparently country-western music mad and is renamed Kelly Clarkson. She has two feline siblings and one golden retriever sibling; apparently she thinks this is grand. Finally, Aura and Salia are eating like mad to make up for lost time. Salia has become so friendly and loving and is looking for a home. TK does adopt out of the area but you have to go there to pick up the cat(s).
