Thank you for Administrative Professionals Day?
« on: August 03, 2018, 08:52:17 am »
Where I work, Administrative Professionals Day is honored by giving us a token gift every year. Some of them are quite nice and practical too, like the powerful mini flashlight we got last year. My etiquette question is, since a small committee is responsible for choosing and disbursing these gift to us every year, should they receive thank you notes from the recipients, or would that be overkill? Would one general thank you from everybody serve? Is a thank you even necessary, since it's a national holiday? What would you do?

Since the gift is essentially a thank you for all that you do as an AA, I'd be inclined to skip the note.

But if you are worried about a note, one note from all the AAs to the committee or to the person who controls the purse strings to buy the gifts would suffice, I would think.

Though the gift itself is chosen and presented by committee, doesn't it represent the sentiments of the entire staff for which you are administrators?  I would think an appropriate general thank you posted on the break room bulletin board might be nice.  Otherwise I'd just skip it.  Presumably you did thank the presenter in person at the time you received the gift, right?

No. It's like if you receive an award, you don't need to thank the voting committee. It's not the same as a celebration of a milestone or occasion.

Also I'm bristling over a flashlight being presented to admins as their gift. I get free flashlights as promos from vendors.

Really, it was quite a nice flashlight, heavy duty, and I appreciated it.  :)

A general thank-you posted in our quarterly newsletter might be appropriate, from all of us administrative people. I don't think we would have to do it every year, but maybe once so that people know that we appreciate being noticed.
